PC software is the set of tools and programs which put the hardware in your computer to work, making it possible to perform a variety of things, from creating documents in word format to creating images to surfing the web. There are two types of pc software that are available: system software and application software. Each of these works in a different way and provides different types of functions for computers.

The most familiar type of PC software is the operating system (OS). It is the first program to run when you turn on your computer and also manages other background and system software as well as applications. The average computer user communicates with OS via its graphical user interface (GUI), or in some cases, a simpler command-line interface.

Other kinds of computer software include device drivers. These act as software interfaces for specific hardware connected to the computer and assist the operating system and computer programs control them. Firmware is a programmable program that runs in memory read-only. It offers low-level hardware control. Utility software can be used to configure, maintain and optimize the performance of a computer.

Programming software is a type of computer software, and it allows developers to write programs, write, test, and analyze other computer programs. It also includes programming languages, such as Java, Python, and assemblers. Compilers and interpreters convert high-level languages to low-level machine code that is executed by the CPU.
